Dave Howlett is the keynote speaker for the 2010 Student-2-Business Networking Conference. Dave will provide a dynamic session on how to make the most of new contacts and connections for our audience of students, business and community representatives.
Dave will also deliver a session for students in each of the rounds of concurrent workshops. In these sessions Dave will provide students with some very useful S2B Advantage skills that they will be able to put to work in the S2B Advantage Room.
If you have watched Dragon's Den on CBC, you'll know one of the judges is Brett Wilson. Today, he sent me this quote:
"A man may fail many times but he isn't a failure until he begins to blame somebody else." - J. Paul Getty
When you arrive at S2B, accept, put on the "game face" and leave your gripes at the door!
RHB Tip #1 No one enjoys hearing someone complain and be negative. You may be frustrated if you have already been out looking for job opportunities, but rather than sharing this frustration, share your interest in exploring opportunities, and ask lots of questions. Remember to smile.
RHB Tip #2
Don't tell me where you are, tell me where you want to go. You are welcome to bring your resume or marketing material to S2B but these things don't tell me who you want to meet. Think about your "target market." What company do you want to work for or who is your ideal client? Write it down. Bring it with you.
RHB Tip #3
It's sad but true. People often judge you quickly by your appearance. Make sure your shoes are clean and polished. Bring a breath mint. Wear something that invites conversation (a pin, some distinctive jewelry, a scarf.) If you are a total fashion klutz like me, ask a stylish. friend "If I could do one thing better, what would it be?" Then listen.
RHB Tip #4
Think about "The Power of 3." If someone hears good things about you (eg Nadia is amazing, or Steve is a really good guy) from 3 independent sources then you automatically become an expert. You just need to get your reputation out there in many different ways.
RHB Tip #5
If you are the shy type and just can’t figure out what to say to people you have just met, my workshop at the Student-2-Business Networking Conference is going to be a revelation for you!
There are thousands of RHBs (real human beings) who have heard this talk and learned something I teach called “Watch your weekend challenges.” Watch how it worked in Las Vegas! http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=4882971&l=aa055fe4a2&id=604526421.
